Bio
Recruited from Churchill in the Latrobe Valley, Paul Dear joined his older brother Greg at Hawthorn, breaking into the senior side during the club's dominant late-1980s era. A powerful and athletic utility, Dear was capable of holding down key posts in defence or attack, as well as providing vigorous relief in the ruck. While often playing a supporting role to the club's superstars during the home and away seasons, he famously seized the spotlight during the 1991 Grand Final against West Coast at Waverley Park.
With key forward Dermott Brereton compromised early, Dear produced a relentless performance, gathering 26 disposals and kicking two goals to be awarded the Norm Smith Medal in the Hawks' premiership victory. Although injuries hampered his output in his final seasons leading to his retirement in 1996, his versatility and ability to stand up in big moments ensured his enduring status as a hero of Hawthorn's golden generation.
