Stats
Bio
A local product recruited from St Bernard's College and Doutta Stars, Paul "Spook" Doran rose through the ranks as a standout junior, captaining the thirds and finishing runner-up in the Morrish Medal. While he famously booted five goals on debut in 1959 while deputising for state full-forward Ron Evans, Doran ultimately established himself as a key defender rather than a spearhead. Renowned for his speed, strong overhead marking, and reliable distribution by foot, he made the full-back position his own and played a vital role in the Bombers' dominant 1962 premiership victory. Doran retired from VFL level in 1965 to captain-coach Ringwood, but maintained a lifelong connection to Essendon, later returning to serve the club as a committeeman and recruiter.
