Bio
Recruited locally from St Bernard’s College in Melbourne's inner north-west, Paul Hamilton was a disciplined and versatile defender who wasted no time establishing himself at Essendon. After progressing through the Under 19s, he made an immediate impact at senior level, winning the club’s Best First Year Player award in 1986 and finishing fourth in the Best and Fairest the following season. Standing 189cm, Hamilton was a close-checking backman capable of matching up on both tall and small forwards, utilising his deceptive pace to shut down opponents in the back pocket or on a half-back flank. He became a fixture in Kevin Sheedy’s defensive unit during the late 1980s, featuring in the Bombers' 1990 Night Premiership victory and the Grand Final side that fell to Collingwood later that year.
Hamilton departed Windy Hill after the 1992 season, a year in which he was recognised as the club's Best Team Man, to pursue a coaching career in Tasmania. He enjoyed significant success as a playing-coach with Glenorchy, leading them to a premiership, before moving into assistant coaching roles with North Melbourne and Adelaide. His connection to Essendon remained strong, eventually seeing him return to the club in 2008 as the General Manager of Football Operations, where he oversaw the football department during a transitional period for the Bombers. A reliable figure on and off the field, Hamilton’s legacy is that of a steadfast defender who evolved into a respected football administrator.
