Bio
Recruited from North Melbourne's reserves via pick 11 in the 1993 Pre-Season Draft, Paul Hopgood forged a career as a disciplined and courageous defender for the Demons. Lacking the opportunities to break into the senior side at Arden Street, he seized his chance at Melbourne, quickly establishing himself as a reliable back pocket specialist. Hopgood was renowned for his close-checking playstyle, often tasked with nullifying dangerous opposition small forwards through concentration and physical pressure rather than accumulating high disposal numbers himself.
Hopgood became a staple of the Melbourne defence throughout the mid-to-late 1990s, playing a role in the club's 1994 and 1998 finals campaigns. His career culminated in the 2000 season, where he was a member of the side that reached the Grand Final against a dominant Essendon outfit. Following that Grand Final defeat, he was delisted, ending his time at the top level. He departed the club as a life member, having played 113 games and served as a dependable stopper during a volatile era for the Demons.
