Bio
Recruited from Ascot Vale, Paul Johnson initially joined Essendon but found himself stuck in the reserves during the early stages of the club's 1980s resurgence under Kevin Sheedy. Unable to crack a formidable senior lineup at Windy Hill between 1982 and 1983, the 182cm utility requested a clearance to North Melbourne for the 1984 season in search of greater opportunity. The move paid immediate dividends when he was selected for the Round 1 blockbuster against Carlton at Waverley Park, where he booted two goals in a promising debut performance. However, those would remain the only majors of his career; Johnson managed just four more senior appearances for the Kangaroos in a sporadic season before losing his place in the side and departing the VFL at the end of the year.
