Originally from Victoria, Paul Johnson was a mobile ruckman drafted by West Coast with pick 24 in the 2002 National Draft. Stuck behind a formidable ruck division boasting Dean Cox and Michael Gardiner, Johnson managed just one senior game for the Eagles before seeking greater opportunities back home with Melbourne via trade. At the Demons, he operated largely as a supporting ruckman to Jeff White and later Mark Jamar, often rotating forward where his athleticism allowed him to cover ground like a midfielder. While persistent injuries and inconsistent form prevented him from cementing a permanent senior spot, his underlying quality was highlighted in 2005 when he won the J.J. Liston Trophy and a premiership with VFL affiliate Sandringham. After being delisted by Melbourne, Johnson earned a final lifeline with Hawthorn in 2011 through the club's pre-season training squad, playing a solitary match for the Hawks before finishing his career as a decorated player in the WAFL.
