Bio
Recruited from Echuca in the Goulburn Valley, Paul O'Brien was a tall utility who arrived at Princes Park during one of the club's most dominant eras. Standing 187cm, he possessed the height to play key positions but faced the unenviable task of trying to dislodge established stars like Geoff Southby and David McKay from the senior defence. Consequently, O'Brien managed just two senior appearances across the 1971 and 1972 seasons, unable to secure a regular spot in the squad that would go on to win the famous high-scoring 1972 premiership. Following his brief stint at VFL level, he transferred to Port Melbourne in the VFA, where he carved out a more sustained playing career away from the logjam of talent at Carlton.
