Stats
Bio
Recruited from Tatura in the Goulburn Valley, Paul Payne was a tall defender who initially made his mark at Melbourne after tasting success in the club's 1983 Under 19s premiership side. He broke into the senior lineup in 1985 and played 28 games over four seasons as a serviceable backman, but his football ambitions eventually clashed with his professional life. After managing just a single game in 1988, Payne made the decision to hang up the boots to focus on a career with the police force. His retirement proved short-lived, however, as he was lured back to the top level by Carlton with pick 40 in the 1989 Pre-Season Draft. Payne added five games in navy blue during a brief swansong season before departing the VFL for good to play with Oakleigh.
