Bio
Recruited from Norwood as a mature-age prospect with pick 66 in the 2010 National Draft, Paul Puopolo defied his late selection to become a fixture of the Hawthorn lineup for a decade. While initially scouted as a small defender, he was successfully reinvented by Alastair Clarkson as a high-pressure small forward. His trademark tackling intensity and defensive acts became the standard for the Hawks' forward line pressure, while his explosive vertical leap allowed him to compete overhead against much taller defenders.
Puopolo formed a lethal small forward combination with Cyril Rioli and Luke Breust, contributing significantly to the club's golden era. He was a mainstay in the side during the historic premiership hat-trick from 2013 to 2015, valued as much for his selfless defensive running as for his finishing ability. He retired at the conclusion of the 2020 season as a three-time premiership player and a life member of the club, finishing his career just four games shy of the 200-game milestone.
