Bio
Recruited from Beverley Hills, Paul Roos emerged to become the undisputed face of the Fitzroy Football Club during its tumultuous final era. Debuting in 1982, he quickly established himself as a star, eventually captaining the Lions and claiming five Kevin Murray Medals as the club's best and fairest. Roos redefined the role of centre half-back, combining defensive accountability with the aerobic capacity to rebound through the midfield and the skill to drift forward to kick goals. His loyalty to Fitzroy was immense, but with the club facing financial ruin and an uncertain future, he made a high-profile move to the Sydney Swans ahead of the 1995 season.
The switch to Sydney rejuvenated his career, as he became a cornerstone of a Swans outfit that surged from the bottom of the ladder to the 1996 Grand Final. His leadership and composure in defence were critical during this period, allowing him to play at an elite level well into his mid-30s. Roos retired in 1998 with 356 games to his name, standing as one of the most decorated players of the modern era despite never capturing a premiership as a player. He is an Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee and was named in the Fitzroy Team of the Century, universally respected as one of the game's most intelligent on-field leaders.
