Bio
Recruited from Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley, Paul Rowlands spent a season developing in the reserves before emerging as a promising key defender in 1969. Standing 185cm, the full-back made an immediate impact in his debut season, earning Melbourne's Best First Year Player award for his defensive reliability. His 1970 campaign famously included a standout performance restricting Hawthorn goal-kicking machine Peter Hudson in Round 2, though he found himself out of favour weeks later after a difficult matchup against St Kilda's Rex Hunt. Rowlands' VFL career was ultimately derailed by a severe wrist injury requiring a bone graft late that season; unable to reclaim his senior spot after recovering in 1971, he was released and moved to the VFA to play with Oakleigh.
