Bio
Recruited from VFA club Northcote, Paul Shanahan was a talented dual-sport athlete who had already tasted premiership success as a teenage cricketer alongside Test captain Bill Lawry before arriving at Fitzroy. Standing 191cm, he was a key position prospect utilized primarily as a tall forward capable of providing a contest and hitting the scoreboard. Despite his physical advantages, Shanahan found it difficult to command a permanent place in the Lions' senior lineup, often operating on the fringe of selection during his four seasons at the club. He eventually sought greater opportunity outside Victoria, leaving the VFL after 1972 to continue his career with West Perth in the WAFL and later West Torrens in the SANFL.
