Bio
Recruited from County Mayo in Ireland, Pearce Hanley stands as one of the most successful international converts in VFL/AFL history. After joining the Brisbane Lions as a rookie, he developed into a damaging line-breaker known for his elite kicking and ability to run and carry off half-back and through the wing. Hanley became a vital playmaker for the Lions during a lean era, culminating in a runner-up finish in the 2014 Merrett-Murray Medal, where his capacity to break the game open and hit the scoreboard made him one of the club's few genuine stars.
Seeking a fresh start after nine seasons at the Gabba, Hanley requested a trade to Queensland rivals the Gold Coast Suns at the end of 2016. While his arrival was expected to add class and experience to the Suns' developing list, his tenure was frustrated by persistent soft tissue injuries and personal hardship. Despite being elevated to the leadership group as vice-captain, he struggled to get on the park consistently, eventually retiring during the 2020 season to conclude a career defined by his successful transition from Gaelic football to the top tier of Australian Rules.
