A professional runner with genuine pace, Percy Cheffers arrived at St Kilda fresh off a 1935 reserves premiership with Melbourne. He was recruited to inject speed into the Saints' midfield, operating as a quick wingman who could cover ground rapidly and support both ends of the ground. Despite his athletic background and reserves success, Cheffers found it difficult to cement a regular spot in the senior lineup at the Junction Oval, playing sporadically across three seasons. His brief VFL career concluded just prior to the outbreak of World War II, where he served with distinction in the RAEME, while his sporting legacy continued through his son, the renowned sports academic John Cheffers.
