Teams

Born into the prominent family behind the G. Damman & Co. tobacco empire and educated at Melbourne Grammar, Percy Damman was the archetype of the turn-of-the-century gentleman sportsman. He joined St Kilda in 1898, the VFL's second season, featuring in seven matches for a struggling side that failed to win a game and claimed the wooden spoon. His football career was ultimately a brief cameo before he turned his attention to his business interests and his true sporting passion: sailing. Damman went on to become a distinguished figure on Port Phillip Bay, serving as the Commodore of the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron during the First World War and leaving a legacy in the sailing world that far outstripped his short stint as a league footballer.
