Family

Recruited from the Preston Football Club, Percy Ellis was a gifted dual-code athlete who made his mark at Fitzroy during the challenging economic climate of the Great Depression. Arriving at Brunswick Street in 1929, he quickly established himself in the senior lineup, utilising the clean hands and anticipation of a top-tier cricketer to hold down a spot as a reliable defender and utility. His durability was a key asset for the Maroons, as he missed minimal football over his four-season tenure before departing the VFL at just 26 years of age. Ellis is perhaps best remembered for his sporting versatility; he played First Class cricket for Victoria as a batsman and enjoyed a long district cricket career with Collingwood. His footballing legacy was later carried on by his son, Graeme, who played a senior game for Richmond in 1951.
