Born in the remote pearling town of Broome, Percy Rodriguez was a gifted all-round athlete who had already played senior WAFL football for Perth while still a schoolboy before moving east to study dentistry. He continued his development at Xavier College and quickly broke into the VFL with University, establishing himself as a dashing wingman known for his pace and daring play. When the Students collapsed and withdrew from the league following the 1914 season, Rodriguez transferred to Melbourne, adding class to the Redlegs' lineup for five games before the Great War intervened. He enlisted in the AIF and rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant, but his promising life and career were tragically cut short when he was killed in action at Noreuil, France, in 1917.
