Bio
A blacksmith from Rutherglen recruited at the mature age of 24, Percy Rowe was a terrifying physical presence whose brute strength defined his role as a bullocking follower. Spotted by Test cricketer Jack Ryder, Rowe made an immediate impact with his "take no prisoners" approach and massive forearms, briefly serving as captain in 1923 before resigning the post to focus on his game. After a hiatus coaching in the Ovens and Murray League, he returned to Victoria Park to play a vital role in the first two flags of the famous "Machine" era. His legacy is immortalised by his performance in the 1928 Grand Final, where he largely ignored the ball to act as a designated bodyguard for Gordon Coventry, physically dismantling the Richmond defence to allow the full-forward to kick a record nine goals in a match remembered by the faithful as "Rowe's Premiership."
