A recruit from the gold mining town of Stawell, Percy Sparks was one of many country footballers trialled by Richmond during its challenging second season in the VFL. He arrived at Punt Road in the middle of 1909, earning his senior debut in a Round 12 clash against Fitzroy at Brunswick Street, followed immediately by a home game against Collingwood. Sparks was unable to cement a place in a struggling Tigers outfit that won just two games for the year, and he departed the VFL scene almost as quickly as he had arrived. While his football career was confined to a brief two-game cameo, he later established a lasting profile in the horse racing industry, becoming a well-known identity with the Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (OTBA) and residing in the racing heartland of Caulfield until his death in 1953.
