Recruited from St Virgil's College in Hobart, Peter Johnston was a tall, spectacular marking forward who began his VFL career with Melbourne. Despite a promising 1978 season where he booted 31 goals, he became part of a high-profile transfer when he was effectively sold to Geelong to fund the Demons' recruitment of the Elliott brothers. Standing 192cm, Johnston developed a reputation as a "cult figure" at Kardinia Park, known for his ability to pull down hangers and a distinctively ungainly kicking style that often kept the crowd on edge.

While he was a solid contributor who helped the Cats reach consecutive preliminary finals, Johnston is best remembered for a piece of football folklore involving the 1981 Preliminary Final against Collingwood. Named as an emergency, he had consumed a heavy lunch of chicken and chips—and reportedly several cigarettes—believing his day was done. When teammate Gary Sidebottom famously missed the team bus, Johnston was a frantic late inclusion, taking the field in less than ideal condition. He played 92 games for Geelong before finishing his VFL career, later earning induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
