Bio
Recruited from North Ringwood, Peter Banfield was a tenacious rover who faced the difficult task of breaking into Essendon's powerhouse midfield during their mid-1980s dynasty. Despite winning a Reserves Best and Fairest in 1986 and boasting a quirky record where the Bombers won every senior game he played, he found opportunities limited behind stars like Alan Ezard and Darren Williams. He transferred to the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural 1987 season, immediately cementing his place in history by lining up in the back pocket for the club's first-ever VFL match. Banfield became a consistent contributor during the Bears' turbulent early years, playing 20 games in that debut season, before eventually continuing his career as a Best and Fairest winner with West Adelaide in the SANFL.
