Bio
Recruited from Bayswater, Peter Barry was a sturdy key position player who found his niche as a reliable full-back for the Blues. Although his progress was briefly stalled by illness in 1960, he became a fixture in the Carlton defence, renowned for his ability to spoil and compete against the era's powerful full-forwards. His career is immortalised by the controversial conclusion to the 1962 Preliminary Final replay against Geelong; with the Blues clinging to a slender lead in the dying seconds, Geelong spearhead Doug Wade appeared to take a match-winning mark within scoring range. However, umpire Jack Irving awarded a free kick to Barry for a shorts-holding infringement, allowing the defender to clear the ball and secure Carlton's passage to the Grand Final. Barry struggled for senior opportunities following that campaign and was cleared to Port Melbourne in 1964.
