Recruited from Sturt, Peter Caven initially entered the AFL with Fitzroy, where he spent three seasons before a transfer to Sydney in 1994. His time in the Harbour City was brief and famously punctuated by a severe facial injury sustained in a collision with Tony Lockett, an event that overshadowed his on-field contributions for the Swans. Caven returned to South Australia to join Adelaide in 1996, a move that revitalised his career and allowed him to settle into a permanent role in defence.

At the Crows, Caven established himself as a courageous and disciplined key defender, frequently tasked with minding the competition's most dangerous forwards despite often being undersized. His ability to execute a defensive role and support his teammates made him a critical component of Malcolm Blight's structure during the club's golden era. This reliability was rewarded with arguably the ultimate success, as Caven played a pivotal role in Adelaide's back-to-back premiership victories in 1997 and 1998, eventually retiring in 2000 as a dual premiership player.
