Teams

Recruited from the amateur ranks at Murrumbeena, Peter Cleal was a tall utility who made a brief appearance for St Kilda at the start of the 1925 season. Standing 185cm—a significant height for the era—he was brought in to provide aerial support and was immediately handed a debut in the opening round. Cleal holds a minor but interesting place in football history, as his first game was St Kilda’s victory over Hawthorn in the Mayblooms' inaugural VFL match at Glenferrie Oval. He managed to hold his place in the senior side for the first month of the competition, stringing together four consecutive appearances, but was unable to make a lasting impact at the elite level. His VFL career ended after Round 4, typifying the fleeting tenure of many district footballers during the league's expansion era.
