Peter Foster

Recruited from Pascoe Vale, Peter Foster began his VFL career with Fitzroy in 1980, primarily operating as a forward. However, he struggled to secure a permanent place in the Lions' senior lineup, managing only a handful of appearances over three seasons before crossing to Footscray in 1983. The move proved to be the catalyst for his career, as he was eventually shifted to centre half-back where his ability to read the play and take strong overhead marks allowed him to flourish.

Under the guidance of Mick Malthouse, Foster developed into one of the competition's most reliable key defenders, anchoring the Bulldogs' backline during their competitive resurgence in the mid-1980s. He was a pivotal figure in the team's run to the 1985 Preliminary Final and maintained a high level of consistency throughout the decade, earning All-Australian selection in 1988 and winning the Charles Sutton Medal as the club's best and fairest in 1990. "Fossie" retired in 1993 as a respected club stalwart who had successfully transformed from a fringe forward into a defensive pillar at the Western Oval.
