Bio
Recruited from Devonport on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Peter Marquis established himself as the defensive anchor of the ruthless Melbourne dynasty of the 1950s. After being spotted by scouts in a curtain-raiser match, he crossed Bass Strait and immediately impressed with his ability to read the play and intercept opposition attacks from full-back. Marquis became a linchpin in Norm Smith’s side, playing a pivotal role in the Demons' premiership hat-trick between 1955 and 1957 where he was often tasked with silencing the league’s most dangerous spearheads. Following the shock 1958 Grand Final loss to Collingwood, he returned to his home state to captain North Hobart to back-to-back state premierships, eventually earning elevation to Legend status in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame. His footballing bloodline continues at the elite level today through his grandson, midfielder Hugh Greenwood.
