Bio
Recruited from Assumption College with a massive reputation as a schoolboy spearhead, Peter McCormack arrived at Victoria Park touted as the next Peter McKenna. His early attempts to secure a spot in the forward line were largely unsuccessful, leading to a career-saving switch to the opposite end of the ground. Reinventing himself as a disciplined and close-checking full-back, McCormack became the anchor of the Magpies' defence. While he lacked the flamboyance of some teammates, he relied on intense concentration, a strong overhead mark, and a prodigious kick that made him the designated player for bringing the ball back into play.
McCormack’s reliability saw him hold down the key defensive post during Collingwood’s string of Grand Final appearances in 1979, 1980, and 1981, often tasked with quelling the league's most dangerous full-forwards. Despite his standing as a Life Member and a key pillar of the "Hafey’s Heroes" era, his exit from the club was abrupt; he was told he was no longer required by a financially struggling Collingwood on the eve of the 1986 season. He crossed Punt Road to Richmond for a brief stint, managing just a handful of games in his final year of VFL football before hanging up the boots.
