Bio
Recruited from Nhill in the Wimmera, Peter Patterson was a lifelong Magpies supporter who lived out his boyhood dream after catching the eye of scouts with his dashing play in the country. A pacey, long-striding wingman with a lethal left-foot kick, he wasted no time making an impact at Victoria Park, donning the number 17 guernsey previously worn by his idol Thorold Merrett. Patterson is best remembered for his stellar 1966 finals campaign, where he was one of Collingwood’s best players in the heartbreaking one-point Grand Final loss to St Kilda, gathering 18 kicks on the big stage. However, injuries—most notably a broken leg—stalled his momentum just as he was entering his prime, restricting him to sporadic appearances over his final few seasons. He eventually departed the VFL to play for Waverley and Box Hill in the VFA before returning to the country as a playing coach for South Warrnambool.
