Recruited from North Broken Hill as a mature-age prospect in the 1992 National Draft, Peter Quill was a pacy rover who quickly established himself in the Footscray senior side. Making his debut at age 23 in 1993, he utilised his natural speed and defensive pressure to become a consistent contributor at the Western Oval, often rotating forward to hit the scoreboard or harass opposition defenders. He remained a regular fixture in the lineup during the club's transition from Footscray to the Western Bulldogs, playing the bulk of his career under Alan Joyce. However, Quill fell out of favour during the 1997 season under new coach Terry Wallace, managing only a handful of games in his final year and missing out on the club's memorable finals campaign before concluding his career with 67 senior appearances.
