Recruited from Bennettswood, Peter Schwab established himself as a vital structural component of Hawthorn's dominant 1980s lineup. While often overshadowed by the superstars of the era, Schwab was a disciplined and reliable wingman and half-back who could perform effective run-with roles on dangerous opposition midfielders. His defensive diligence and ability to link up play rewarded him with three premiership medallions in 1983, 1986, and 1988, though his playing career is often remembered for a moment of indiscipline during the 1989 Second Semi-Final. A strike on Geelong's Andrew Bews resulted in a suspension that cost him a place in that year's legendary Grand Final victory.

After 158 games in brown and gold, Schwab departed Glenferrie Oval following the 1991 season to extend his career at Richmond. He spent two seasons at Punt Road, joining the club to reunite with his former mentor Allan Jeans. Schwab provided experienced leadership to a struggling Tigers outfit before retiring at the end of 1993. He remained a prominent figure in the football landscape long after hanging up the boots, eventually returning to Hawthorn as senior coach and holding various high-level administrative roles with the AFL.
