Bio

1 revision

Recruited from West Perth in the WAFL, Peter Steward crossed the Nullarbor to join North Melbourne ahead of the 1962 VFL season. He quickly established himself as a fixture in the Kangaroos' backline, noted for his reliability and close-checking style of play. Operating primarily as a defender, Steward was tasked with curbing opposition half-forwards during a decade where North Melbourne struggled for consistent team success and rarely featured in finals action.

Steward remained a loyal servant at Arden Street throughout the 1960s, compiling over a century of games for the club. While he rarely troubled the scorers, managing just 10 goals across his nine-season tenure, his durability and defensive application made him a key component of the back six. He retired from VFL football at the end of the 1970 season, concluding his career as a highly respected clubman just prior to the arrival of Ron Barassi and North Melbourne's subsequent rise to power in the 1970s.
