Recruited from Central District, Peter Vardy established himself as a clever medium-sized forward for the Adelaide Crows during their golden era in the late 1990s. Renowned for his strong overhead marking ability relative to his height and his reliability in front of goal, Vardy was a constant threat on the half-forward flank. Although a broken collarbone cruelly ruled him out of the club's breakthrough 1997 Premiership, he returned to play a pivotal role in the 1998 Grand Final triumph, booting two goals in the second half to help the Crows overrun North Melbourne.

Following the 2001 season, Vardy was traded to Melbourne as Adelaide looked to refresh its list, providing the Demons with an experienced target inside 50. He made an immediate impact at his new club, kicking 40 goals in 2002 and featuring in the Demons' finals campaign. However, persistent injuries hampered his output over the subsequent two years, eventually leading to his retirement at the end of 2004. He remains best remembered as a smart, opportunistic forward who overcame personal heartbreak to become a Premiership player.
