A skilful and athletic utility, Phil Cronan rose to prominence in the WAFL as a premiership player with South Fremantle in 1980 before a brief stint with West Perth. His arrival at St Kilda in 1984 was significant not just for his on-field talent, but for the landmark legal battle he and Phil Narkle fought against the WAFL to secure their clearances to the VFL. Cronan played 49 games for the Saints as a running player who could hit the scoreboard, before crossing to the Western Bulldogs for two final VFL seasons. He later returned to the WAFL to finish his playing career at South Fremantle and eventually transitioned into coaching, leading Swan Districts in 1997 and mentoring various colts sides.
