Bio
Recruited from Ovens & Murray powerhouse Wangaratta Rovers, Phil Doherty was a tall key forward who earned the nickname "The Flying Doctor" for his aerial ability and surname. Standing 191cm, he showed genuine promise in front of the sticks at North Melbourne, averaging nearly two goals a game across his two seasons at Arden Street. However, his VFL career was cut short when he became a pawn in one of the most significant trades of the 1970s, transferred to WAFL club Perth as part of the deal to bring champion rover Barry Cable to Victoria. Doherty justified the move in the West, notably booting five goals for the Demons in the 1974 WAFL Grand Final, before eventually settling permanently in Western Australia to pursue business interests.
