Teams

A product of the strong football nursery at Assumption College via Robinvale, Phil Egan arrived at Richmond as a talented Indigenous utility with a leap that belied his 180cm frame. He made his senior debut in Round 1, 1982—the same day as fellow Indigenous star Maurice Rioli—and quickly established himself in the senior side. Egan enjoyed a promising rookie season, playing 14 games and featuring in the Tigers’ semi-final victory, but suffered the heartbreak of being omitted for the Grand Final against Carlton, which Richmond ultimately lost. He bounced back to become a fixture of the Tigers' lineup throughout the 1980s, playing his best football in 1984 when he finished sixth in the Best and Fairest.

Egan was known for his versatility and physical strength, often deployed on a wing or half-forward where his overhead marking and contested work stood out. While primarily a utility, he produced a memorable cameo as an undersized full-forward in 1988, booting seven goals against North Melbourne and following it up with another strong performance the next week. After 125 games at Punt Road, he was traded to Melbourne for the 1991 season. His time with the Demons was brief; he played just the opening round—a heavy loss where the team kicked only two goals—before being dropped to the reserves and retiring midway through the year.
