Teams

Recruited from Claremont, Phil Gilbert was a talented defender who began his AFL journey with Melbourne after being selected in the 1991 National Draft. He made a memorable start to his tenure in the red and blue, famously keeping Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall to just three goals in his 1993 debut. Despite showing promise as a running half-back, Gilbert is perhaps most significant to football history as the centrepiece of a lopsided trade; he was sent to Fremantle for their inaugural 1995 season in exchange for the zone selection that Melbourne used to recruit future superstar Jeff Farmer. Reunited with his former WAFL mentor Gerard Neesham at the Dockers, Gilbert could not cement a regular spot in the side and was delisted after two seasons, eventually returning to the state league to serve as the inaugural captain of the newly formed Peel Thunder.
