Recruited from University Blues after a brief training stint with Richmond, Phil Rhoden became a cult figure at Melbourne known more for his dominance in the reserves than his fleeting senior career. A stocky, balding back pocket who lacked pace but possessed a thunderous drop kick, Rhoden was a standout in the lower grades, winning the Gardiner Medal as the VFL Reserves Best and Fairest in 1968 and captaining the Demons' reserves to a premiership in 1970. Despite managing only three senior appearances, his contribution to the club was significant; he hailed from a prominent legal family and served as a committeeman for nearly a decade after his playing days, eventually receiving Life Membership for his services.
