Bio
Recruited from Preston Churches, Phil Ryan arrived at Collingwood as a 17-year-old talent during the Second World War and quickly developed into a versatile tall option for the Magpies. He split his playing duties between the ruck and the forward line, proving a capable marking target who could hit the scoreboard heavily on his day, most notably booting six goals against Hawthorn in 1945. Ryan was a consistent contributor during a competitive era for the club, featuring in five finals matches—including two narrow preliminary final defeats—but he ultimately finished his VFL career without a premiership. He departed Victoria Park after the 1947 season and later became a transformative figure in local football, captain-coaching Montmorency to its first-ever Diamond Valley Football League flag in 1951.
