Bio
Recruited from Yarrawonga in the Murray Football League, Phil Ryan was a tall utility who also developed his craft at the famous football nursery Assumption College. Standing 191cm, he possessed the height of a key position player or ruckman but offered the versatility to fill various roles, often drifting forward or supporting the followers. He established himself as a consistent figure in the North Melbourne lineup during the early 1970s, helping the club climb from the bottom of the ladder to finals contention. His service was rewarded with selection in the 1974 Grand Final side, where he lined up in a forward pocket during the loss to Richmond.
Ryan's career story is one of significant contribution but unfortunate timing during the club's golden era. In the historic 1975 season, he played 12 games and celebrated his 100th league appearance in the final round victory over South Melbourne. Despite being a regular member of the senior team, he was squeezed out of the side for the finals series and missed a spot in the club's maiden premiership 22. Ryan remained at Arden Street for one more season, playing six games in 1976 before retiring from VFL football at just 25 years of age, departing as a respected centurion of the club.
