Bio
A powerful Tasmanian recruit from North Launceston, Phil "Horse" Stephens arrived at St Kilda in 1959 with a reputation as a prolific country goal-kicker. Standing 188cm, he was a strong-marking key forward and occasional ruckman known for his superb leap and booming torpedo punt. His VFL career was unfortunately cut short after just six games due to a knee injury; when he sought a fresh start the following year, St Kilda refused to clear him to a rival Victorian club. Consequently, Stephens moved to the SANFL to play for Norwood, where he immediately established himself as a star, famously booting six goals for South Australia in a state game victory over Victoria in 1960 before eventually returning to Tasmania to finish his career as a local legend.
