Recruited from South Warrnambool, Phil Stevens arrived at Kardinia Park as a talented teenager and made his senior debut for Geelong at just 17 years of age. While he initially started his VFL career as a half-forward flanker, he eventually found his true niche at the other end of the ground. Transforming into a reliable half-back flanker, Stevens became a staple of the Cats' defence throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, noted for his consistency and ability to read the play behind the ball.

After eight seasons and 120 games with Geelong, Stevens found himself on the fringes of selection in 1975, managing only six senior appearances for the year. Seeking to extend his career, he crossed to St Kilda for the 1976 season, where he added valuable experience to the Saints' backline. He went on to play another four years at Moorabbin, taking his career tally past the 150-game milestone before retiring at the end of 1979. Following his playing days, he maintained a strong connection to the game as the captain-coach of Sandringham in the VFA and later as a long-serving administrator for the VAFA.
