Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle with pick 60 in the 1997 National Draft, Phillip Read established himself as a tenacious small defender and midfielder who played with a distinct physical edge. He made an immediate impact at West Coast, winning the club's Rookie of the Year award in 1998, but is perhaps best remembered for his central role in the chaotic "Demolition Derby" against Fremantle in 2000. Despite his promising start, Read's time in the west was severely derailed by consecutive knee reconstructions that forced him to miss the entire 2001 and 2002 seasons. Although he returned to play 11 games in 2003, the Eagles delisted him at the end of the year.
Read was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne with the third pick in the 2004 Pre-Season Draft, where he added experience and aggression to the Demons' back half. He played 21 games in his first season in red and blue, but soft tissue injuries—specifically persistent hamstring issues—prevented him from recapturing his best form over the subsequent two years. His AFL career concluded at the end of 2006, though he signed off on a high note by winning the Norm Goss Medal as best afield in Sandringham's VFL premiership victory before returning to the WAFL to play for Subiaco.
