Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle, Phonse Wood was a commanding centre half-back who made an immediate impact during a brief but distinguished stint with South Melbourne. The Western Australian established himself as a defensive pillar upon his arrival in 1907, earning recognition as one of the Swans' best performers in that year's Grand Final loss to Carlton. His standing as an elite defender was further solidified when he represented the VFL at the inaugural National Carnival in 1908. Despite his rapid rise to representative honours, Wood's VFL career was short-lived, as he departed after just two seasons to pursue opportunities with Sturt in South Australia and later as a player-coach for Prahran in the VFA.
