Bio
A schoolteacher and World War I veteran who survived the Spanish Flu during his service, Ralph Greenhalgh was a mature-age recruit plucked from Croydon in the Yarra Valley Football League. After joining Footscray at age 28, he immediately made the centre half-back position his own, earning praise for his strong marking and "electrifying dashes" out of defence. He barely missed a match during his two seasons at the Western Oval, proving himself a reliable and exciting key defender. His League career ended prematurely not due to form, but a teaching transfer to the country town of Murrayvale that forced his retirement from VFL football.
