Bio
A product of East Geelong, Ralph Patman was a mature-age recruit whose VFL opportunities were shaped by the Second World War. With his local club in recess due to wartime travel restrictions, the 27-year-old initially broke into the league with Fitzroy, making a solitary senior appearance in 1943 after a brief apprenticeship in the seconds. When the Pivot returned to competition in 1944, Patman transferred to Geelong and immediately established himself as a durable and consistent follower. He became a vital cog in the returning side, playing every possible match over two seasons and performing well enough to finish runner-up to Jim Fitzgerald in the 1945 Best and Fairest count. Despite his strong standing at the club, he departed the league the following season to accept a coaching position with Nhill in the Wimmera Football League.
