Bio
Recruited from the University Blacks in the amateur competition, Ray Allsopp established himself at Punt Road as a nippy, goal-kicking rover with a sharp sense for reading the ball off packs. While the Tigers struggled as a team during the late 1950s, Allsopp found personal success, particularly in 1957 when he finished runner-up in the club best and fairest and earned Victorian state selection. He formed a dangerous partnership with Brownlow Medallist Roy Wright, consistently crumbing the ball from the giant ruckman's tap work to hit the scoreboard. Although his playing career was relatively brief, finishing with a respectable goal tally from his 54 games, Allsopp’s true legacy in the game was cemented post-retirement. He became the visionary architect of the "Vickick" program—the precursor to the national Auskick initiative—revolutionising junior development and ensuring the code's grassroots participation for generations.
