Bio
Recruited from Launceston in Tasmania, Ray Biffin became a cult figure at Melbourne during the 1970s due to his imposing physical presence and versatility. While he lacked sheer pace, he made up for it with aggression and strength, capable of playing key positions at either end of the ground. He was best known as a rugged protector of his smaller teammates, often absorbing physical punishment to clear paths for skilled movers like Robert Flower and Stan Alves.
Despite his reputation as an enforcer, Biffin was a capable footballer who played 170 games for the Demons. He showcased his utility value by topping the club's goalkicking in 1976 with 47 majors, a season where he largely operated out of the goal square. He remained a loyal servant to the club through a difficult decade on the field, retiring in 1979 as a respected Life Member who provided much-needed steel to the Melbourne lineup.
