Bio
Recruited from Castlemaine United, Ray Bower was a dedicated rover and forward pocket who famously never relocated to Melbourne during his league career, instead commuting by train every Saturday to play before returning to his job as a draughtsman in the country. He broke into the Richmond side in 1944, playing 13 games as a handy crumbing option, before crossing to Essendon for the 1946 season. However, Bower arrived at Windy Hill just as the Bombers were entering a golden era; caught on the fringe of a premiership-winning squad, he struggled to command a regular spot in the senior 22 against elite competition. After two seasons of being squeezed out of a powerhouse lineup, he moved to Port Melbourne and eventually returned to Castlemaine, where he became a local premiership star.
