Recruited from the Ormond Amateurs, Ray Carr burst onto the VFL scene with Melbourne in 1970, famously kicking a goal with his first touch and booting seven majors in just his third senior appearance. Despite a prolific strike rate—averaging better than two goals a game—the medium-sized forward struggled to cement a permanent spot in the 22, dominating the reserves goalkicking in 1971 but finding senior opportunities limited. His time at the Demons came to an abrupt end in early 1972 after coach Ian Ridley publicly criticized him for playing from behind rather than leading up the ground, prompting Carr to request a mid-season clearance to Oakleigh in the VFA. He made an immediate impact, playing in a VFA premiership that same year and achieving the rare distinction of polling both Brownlow Medal and J.J. Liston Trophy votes in a single season, before eventually becoming a goalkicking icon in the Federal League with Oakleigh Districts.
