Bio
Recruited from Sale in country Victoria, Ray Dawson was a rover and wingman who broke into a powerhouse Melbourne lineup in the early 1960s. After overcoming an initial clearance dispute to debut in Round 1, 1961, he established himself as a regular contributor, enjoying his most productive campaign in 1962. However, his progress was stalled by a car accident prior to the 1963 season, resulting in a dislocated collarbone that restricted him to just six appearances that year. The timing proved unfortunate; Dawson was cut from the Demons' senior list on the eve of their 1964 premiership season. He found a lifeline at South Melbourne, adding four games to his tally, before eventually moving to the Riverina to captain-coach Leeton.
